In 2020 Michael was appointed as the Minister of Transport and Minister of Workplace Relations and Safety.
As Minister of Transport, Michael is responsible for overseeing the transport system in New Zealand. A key emphasis of his work is to grow the proportion of low emission and electric vehicles in New Zealand’s fleet through policy interventions, and reduce transport emissions from across the transport system by increasing mode shift and investing in public transport.
During his time in the role, the New Zealand Government has introduced measures to encourage the importation of low and zero emissions vehicles through the Clean Car Programme, halved public transport fares, and invested in hundreds of new electric cars for public sector agencies.
Michael is driven by the core belief that all people deserve the opportunity to flourish and reach their potential regardless of background by building strong, fair, and supportive communities.
